Shenseea celebrates four Grammy noms

Dancehall star Shenseea is elated that she has copped four Grammy nominations, including the prestigious Album Of The Year category, after she benefited from a change in rules that has allowed credited featured artists, songwriters of new material, producers, recording engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers who worked on that album to be automatically nominated.

She was named among the dozens of featured engineers, songwriters, producers, artistes and mixers who contributed to Kanye West’s Donda album, the rapper’s first Grammy nomination since 2007’s Graduation.

“Even when I feel low the blessings continue to flow! Who could it be but God? Had to get up out my bed for this one! 4 fxking Grammy nominations!!!!!!!!!!” the 25-year-old, whose given name is Chinsea Lee, cheered on Instagram.

“Damn dawg I haven’t even released my debut album yet @kanyewest @masego @majorlazer thanks for trusting me on y’all songs 🙏🏽 #ShenYengz,” she continued.

The nominations for the 64th Grammy Awards were announced yesterday and Donda is one of the ten projects vying for Album Of The Year. The Big Four general field categories (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist) has grown from 8 to 10 nominees each — another rule change.

Shenseea, who was also recently nominated for Best Reggae Act at the MOBO Awards, posted that she received nominations for Best Rap Album, Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for ‘Tiny’ on Major Lazer’s Music Is The Weapon (Reloaded) and Best Progressive R&B Album (for Silver Tongue Devil on Masego’s Studying Abroad: Extended EP),

Shenseea joins her compatriot Reggae Grammy winner Mark “Buju Banton” Myrie, as a nominee as the ‘Gargamel’ was given a nod in the Album Of The Year for West’s Donda. Buju Banton was credited on the album for the single Believe What I Say, while Shenseea was a featured artist on the tracks, Pure Souls and OK OK pt 2 on Donda.

As mentioned before, the Recording Academy has stipulated that this year, if an album is up for Album Of The Year, then all credited technical and creative contributors who worked on that album are automatically nominated. Previously, the Grammy rule stated that all of these music professionals had to be credited with 33 percent or more of playing time (on the album), in order to be nominated.

“To be recognized as a GRAMMY nominee, a featured artist must be credited as a featured artist; and make a significant and artistic contribution beyond accompaniment,” the Recording Academy dictates.

However, the Recording Academy’s rules indicate that featured acts in these Genre categories must contribute more than 51% of playing time on the project, in order to be considered nominated.

Two new categories have been added, bringing the total number of GRAMMY Award categories to 86:Best Global Music Performance (Global Music Field) and Best Música Urbana Album (Latin Music Field). Nominations in all of the GRAMMY Award general and genre fields will now be determined by a majority, peer-to-peer vote of voting members of the Recording Academy.

The Grammy Awards ceremony will be held on January 31, 2022, at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

Shenseea is set to release her debut album in early 2022, under Rvssian’s Rich Immigrants label.
