Master drummer Kirk Bennett is getting major props in the reggae-dancehall industry for his brilliant work on a new Jukeboxx riddim, Greatest Creation, for fellow producer Shane Brown which boasts heavyweight names such as Shabba Ranks, Konshens and Tarrus Riley.
He had just returned to the island from a show in Barbados with Beres Hammond when he got a frantic call from Shane Brown.
“I was just on my way from the airport when Shane Brown called me telling me he and Tarrus have the baddest idea! I said mad, let me hear it. He called Tarrus on a three-way call, then Tarrus sang it to me in an energetic vibes. I was like wow that bad! Then Shane Brown sey “yoow Kirk mi a come link u now!” I was so tired, but the energy of the song gave me a vibes. They came by me and lay down the demo and history was after that. It was a mad song, and then Shabba got on the riddim,” he said.
Recently, Kirk Bennett was named in the prestigious largeup.com Top 10 reggae drummers list alongside names such as Sly Dunbar, Lloyd Knibb of The Skatalites, Carlton Barrett and Mikey ‘Boo’ Richards.
“I am humbled to be included in such elite company, but I think that I am still climbing up the ladder, I have a long way to go, but it is great to be recognised,” he said.
Bennett, a top flight beatmaker known for the worldwide hit ‘Tek Weh Yuself’, has continued to steadily work on productions for his own Kirkledove label.
“I just did something with Queen Ifrica, a song called “Natural Green Herbs”, as well as with Tony Rebel, a song called “70 Bars”. Also working with RDX on some projects,” he said.
He recently released a new Busy Signal single called ‘Love Gyal’ .
Bennett tours heavily with Beres Hammond as well as with international superstar Jah Cure. He has played on several of Hammond’s big hits, including Come Down Father and I Feel Good. Bennett, who has also done session work with Toots Hibbert and Marcia Griffiths, counts Sly Dunbar, Carlton ‘Carly’ Barrett of The Wailers and Lloyd Knibb of The Skatalites as his biggest influences. He has also been working on solo projects, the most successful being the ‘Dancer’s Anthem’ instrumental.
“The video for “Dancer’s Anthem” is being heavily played on television in Trinidad, so it is a great look,” he said.
