A Jamaica Defence Force member was shot and injured by gunmen in St Catherine on Wednesday night.

Reports are that about 8pm, the off-duty soldier was walking along the road close to Shelter Rock, a community located on the outskirts of Spanish Town, when he was approached by armed men.

The men opened fire hitting the military man before fleeing from the area on foot.

The injured man was rushed to hospital where he has been admitted. Details of his condition are not known at this time.

The St Catherine North police are investigating.
