If you take a look at the Facebook page of reggae artiste Sandy Star, you won’t see many photographs of her when she was a mountainous 288 pounds.   Now, that she has lost a whopping 67 pounds in only six months on a radical, controversial diet dubbed the ‘HCG diet’, her Facebook page is littered with photographs of her transformation to a svelte 221 pounds, and now, her social media pages are flooded with encouraging comments from friends and fans.

“It was really hard to stick to the diet, you do cheat because it is so strict. But when you cheat, you don’t lose weight for five days, so then you will find yourself getting depressed again. With HCG, You just  have to focus on the positives, the reaction of people when they see you, to motivate you to stick with this strict 500 calorie a day diet,” she said.

To stay within the constraints of her 500 calorie regimen, she ate one apple two times a day, four ounces of protein two times a day and either a tomato or a bowl callaloo.

“There is a small list of things you can eat, but you have to remember that 500 calories is barely enough to keep you going, in fact, without the HCG, you would pass out from the hunger, but the HCG helps you to feed off your fat,” she said.

A journeywoman in the reggae industry Sandy Star is known for the minor hits, 'Don't Wanna Lose Your Love' and a combination called 'Let Off the Money' with deejay Macka Diamond. Music insiders felt that her balllooning weight did not fit in well in an industry obsessed with glamour and sex appeal.

Sandy Star declared that she is much healthier now, and can perform for an extended period on stage since her dramatic weight loss. She performed at a show called 'Flashback Fridays' at Mingles in Bronx, NY over the weekend to rave reviews. Her latest video, 'Come Over', for indie label, Magz Records, shows off her new stunning figure. She will also be releasing a cover of Rihanna's smash hit, 'Diamonds' this week.

"My life is so much better now," she said.

She admitted that before she begun the diet, she was a slave to the sugar rush, and was a habitual ‘guzzler of juices’.

“I would drink a gallon of juice in 20 minutes, I was terrible at it, I would drink, drink and drink, so on this diet, I cut out all sugar, I drink water, “ Sandy Star said.

British endocrinologist Albert T. W. Simeons proposed HCG as an adjunct to an ultra-low-calorie weight-loss diet (less than 500 calories). Simeons studied pregnant women in India on a calorie-deficient diet, and "fat boys" with pituitary problems (Frölich's syndrome) treating them with low-dose hCG, and his results claimed that both lost fat rather than lean (muscle) tissue. Simeons' results were not reproduced by other researchers and in 1976 in response to complaints the FDA required Simeons and others to include a  disclaimer on all advertisements.

Years later, there was a resurgence of interest in the "HCG diet" following promotion by convicted fraudster Kevin Trudeau. Review studies refuting the HCG diet have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, both concluding that hCG is neither safe nor effective as a weight-loss aid.

Despite the naysayers, she believes it is a miracle.

“It is a miracle, I did a lot of research online, and I saw an ad for a clinical run at the Ruthven Medical Centre in Kingston. When I went it, I found out it cost about 40,000 for a six week round of the hormone, and you  have to inject yourself with the HCG with a small needle, but diabetic patients do it, so it’s not that big of a deal,” she said.

She has taken a break from the diet but plans to resume soon.

“The results are incredible, I just inject the fatty deposits on my body and I burn all the fat, and my skin is not flabby, it conforms to my body like a shrink wrap, I can lose another 20 pounds or so,” the singer who is busy promoting her latest video, Come Over for Magz Productions, said
