A family dispute between an uncle and niece which escalated into violence grabbed the attention of court personnel when both appeared recently in the Spanish Town RM Court.

Perhaps it would have served the niece's interests better if she had remembered the biblical saying, "grevious words stir up anger but a soft answer turn away wrath"  because after having been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm for her act, she narrowly escaped a prison sentence.

The accused, Keneisha Clarke, is alleged to have taken a stone and hit her uncle Clive Clarke causing swelling and pain.

"Yes your honour I did hit with him the stone. He said something that was hurtful so I hit him," she admitted plainly in open court.

When RM Ann-marie Nembhard enquired as to what was said, the accused said "said I am not related to him and that I'm a jacket. It hurt me your honour. It hurt me bad".

"Madam you can't go around hitting your uncle. He is older and wiser and you should respect your elders no matter what,"  the judge said, before handing down a probational sentence of 12 months.
