Seven of 32 cops suing Police Commissioner Dr Carl Williams for a promised promotion that they never received, penned their signatures to a letter apologising to the Top Cop last week. It was not immediately clear why the cops backtracked on the issue.

The seven cops have also requested that they be removed from the lawsuit.

In the letter obtained by Loop News, the cop apologised wholeheartedly to Dr. Williams.

"We unequivocally apologise to the commissioner and our colleagues for the embarrassment to the Jamaica Constabulary brought by the filing of a lawsuit seeking to mandate the promotion to the rank of inspector of all participants,"

It was not our intention to in anyway slur the commissioner's reputation or to bring the organisation into disrepute," the letter read.

The cops had participated in the High Potential Detective Training Programme, which started in 2013 and was to run for 18 months before it was extended by another six months.

The cops had claimed that they were promised a promotion after finishing the programme, but this did not happen and had since brought a lawsuit claiming breach of rights against the commissioner and the attorney general.

Now they have backtracked.

"We wish to give assurance of our support to the decisions taken by the High Command that have the public interest as its end, and in that regard, we have instructed our lawyer to remove us from the action," the document continued.

The case is expected to be heard by the Judicial Review Court in November.
