A man with psychiatric challenges was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 and released in to the care of Mrs. May Pinnock-Mitchell as surety when they appeared in the Spanish Town RM Court before RM Simone Maddix on March 3, 2015.
The accused was charged with assault with intent to rape and burglary.
Council  Beckford, appearing for the accused, Leonardo Mitchell outlined that his client was chopped, stabbed, had a punctured lung and was not known for any violent acts, and lived under the care of his mother, who is also a principal of a school.
It was alleged that on February 14, 2015 around 9 p.m. the complainant was at home with her cousin and a friend and retired to bed. It was around 5:50 a.m. that the complainant was awakened by someone shaking her right leg. She was awakened to see the accused, who was known to her with a knife, who pulled down his pants and later attempted to stab her.
The cousin of the complainant heard the ruption and used a cup to hit the accused and a chopper was used to chop him. They managed to restrain the accused and called the police for assistance.
When he was locked up on the day in question, Leonardo Mitchell uttered "Officer mi stab her wid de knife cause mi tell de gyal fi skin out n she chuck pa mi".
At this point, the prosecutor began to chuckle, then the courtroom burst into a wave of belly-huggling laughter.
Sergeant of the court shouted: "silence in the court!" in between his own guffaws. But even RM Maddix was giggling, and even the prosecutor was laughing.
Mitchell was ordered to be transferred to the Tower Street Correctional Centre were he will receive medical attention and a psychiatric report done. He currently attends Portmore Health Centre for treatment and is also a patient at the Bellevue Hospital.
Council Beckford who outlined that Mitchell frequented at the complainant's home and would often time run errands for her was passing by and saw the grill opened and entered and it was at that time he was attacked by the persons in the house.
However, Mrs Pinnock-Mitchell stated that she could seek proper care for him if granted bail at Dr. Abel Home where psychiatric counselling was done and also classes held. It was then that the judge granted bail with his mother as surety and ordered that to receive medical treatment at which time a psychiatric evaluation report will be done to see if he is fit to plea.
The case will be mentioned on May 5, 2015.
