Former People's National Party (PNP) Western St Mary Member of Parliament Dr Neil McGill was shot dead on Independence Day in Jamaica.

According to police blotters, Dr. McGill was shot dead in Hillside, Manchester, Jamaica at around 9 p.m Friday in the community known by the slightly off-putting name of "Vietnam", a socially depressed community close to the Northern Caribbean University.

Investigators say that robbery does not appear to be the motive at this stage. because they found Dr McGill seated around the steering wheel with the car engine still idling. They believe that he may have stopped his car moments before he was shot in the chest.

Dr. McGill had mounted a challenge for the PNP against the Jamaica Labour Party Central Clarendon MP Mike Henry in the 2007 general election.
